Fun finds

Sunday was one of those mornings where the weather didn't look promising and I wondered whether it would be worth going to the car boot. As we're getting to the end of the season I decided to go and get my fix anyway.

Can anyone tell me what possessed me to buy this little guy? Explaining it to Niobe wasn't easy! I've mentioned before that she has threatened to move out if I buy any more.

Imagine her horror then when she saw this children's desk sitting in the corner of the lounge! Again - why? I can only put it down to nostalgia and my inability to pass up a bargain! Does anyone have a couple of old inkwells - I'd love to put those back in. Its actually in good condition but it does lack any sign of nicely aged graffiti by penknife!

I also picked up a few other bits for pennies - and look! Vintage baubles! Have you seen the price of these on ebay! I seem to be picking up a few bits of royalty and this tin is in perfect condition for its age. I love old battered frames and this series of paintings by I Campbell Taylor. I've seen a few of these pictures at car boots lately with Victorian ladies busy at their needlework or doing a bit of harp practise but they have been large and wouldn't be allowed in our "public rooms!" "Put them in your room Mother" would be the message.

I spotted this set of inks and quickly snapped them up imagining long winter nights learning how to use them. How annoyed was I when I got home to find the bottles were virtually empty! I'd been seduced by the lovely illustrations on the boxes which are also reproduced on the tiny little bottles. (Lesson learned - always check the contents)

More haberdashery for my collection...

My heart quickens every time I see this shade of green. Two lovely aged kitchen implements and (yet another) tin. I call it "50s green" but perhaps its more 40s - any thoughts?

Oh and not forgetting my Royal Couple tin plates. This is another collection that is growing - tin plates sometimes known as cocktail trays...

All in all a great Sunday stash!

  4. Great collection, I wouldn't have ben able to pass up on any of these either and I also would have received the same comments when I got home. The desk is great and I love the glass baubles, I always snap these up whenever I see them. I also like 50s green although sometimes I call it 30s green. I think the kitchen utensils would definitely be 40s or 50s though.

  5. Lovely, lovely finds! I'd have bought the horse too...I almost bought a dolls house on Sunday but someone who had a little girl bought it so it was just as well! I got my vintage Christmas decs in July for 75p on eBay they'd go for stupid money. And as for Windsor and Newton inks, the boxes are my main reason for buying them! xx

  7. I didn't realise the baubles were considered valuable these days - I have some still in my Christmas decorations box and so may be sitting on a goldmine! I love the desk and rocking horse too and am glad you managed to find such a good haul.

  9. Well done, especially on the Christmas baubles. I've been looking all the season for these but folk around here are savvy and sell them for ebay prices at the boot.
I would have had a hard time walking past the horse and the desk. What lovely pieces. I hope you find the inkwells.
Others just don't understand car boot addiction, do they? My family are just the same. Anything big I bring home is usually met with 'WHAT?!' :) xx

  11. I'm sure thats my school desk - does it have my name on it? I did think about you yesterday as hubby and I were dashing off to see the DQ as I know you will be on your own when your daughter goes to Uni. It will be doubly difficult if she is so far away. You need to set up Skype if you dont already use it. xxxxx

  14. Coveting the childrens school desk, mind you I cannot squeeze another piece of furniture into our house, well not without a lot of fuss. We are having a conservatory put on - I wonder how long it will take for me to fill that up.

  15. When I think of the Christmas baubles we had - those are lovely. Perhaps you could sit a vintage doll or teddy bear on the rocking horse ?!
