In the pink!

Why oh why did I touch the "blogger designer" thingy? Hopefully normal service will be resumed once I can get my technical assistant to sort me out...

In the meantime I'm going to have to manage which for someone as virtually challenged as me isn't easy.

A few days ago "A Thrifty Mrs" commented on my picture below on Flickr and asked me to share my thoughts. I've been steadily increasing my collection (the picure in my side bar shows what it was like a year ago!)and have been able to increase it quite significantly. (There is another shelf with my tureens on it higher up too!). I use this everyday now and love mixing and matching it! Such lovely sherbet-y colours.

Ann of "Vintage at the Corner House" (see side bar) has mentioned some of her finds recently and from comments on her post it seems that there is a general lack of pink (not to mention yellow) out there. Ann has a gorgeous pink jug with a green handle - I hadn't seen any with two colours before but it's lovely. Does anyone have lots of yellow?

I'm afraid I'm cheating a little here but I found a stash of pink a couple of months back the shade of which is almost identical to the Peach Petal Grindley that the real utility fans are after. My pink is actually Wedgewood from 1934 - so its actually art deco rather than post war so is older. This means the handles on the gravy boat and tea cups are a little angular but I'm not a purist and given how many pieces I managed to pick up I'll bring some to the fair in Northampton in case anyone wants to add to their collection. I have to say the pink and the yellow certainly lift the other colours when they are together!

Has anyone else discovered the "sherbet glass" which has had a Flickr group set up for it by Teena Vallerine - "Kitschen Pink"? I know it as "sugar glass" with its pastel bands of colour from the same era.

Have I inspired you to start on another collection?

Lovely aren't they!

Love Wend

  2. Your collection is looking great, I love the yellow as well as the pink. I have been finding quite a bit of the frosted glass too and am bringing a jug and matching glasses in different colours to the Northampton fair. Bad news about your ironing board, I would have been really upset.

  3. What a lovely coincidence!! I've blogged today about my utility china finds from the weekend (which included some Jasmine) and have also posted them onto the Flickr group! Its things like these that make blogging so much fun!!

I'm well impressed with your collection and it does look wonderful grouped together like that (I'm glad to see that your shelves look very sturdy!!). Thanks for such an interesting post; I love reading about everyone's utility finds/collections.

  5. It looks so gorgeous and wholesome and vintage, but yes, you do need more yellow. If I see any, I'll let you know!

  6. Wow, I didn't know this was a sort after thing. I have quite a little collection myself but still only about a quarter of what you've got. I'm drooling over your collection. Like you, I love to use mine for everyday use and I love the fact that I'm eating off something with history.
I have to say, most of mine are J & G Meakin and Johnsons of Australia, maybe because that's what was common over here. I have only one Grindley plate.

I have round edged ones but particularly love the scalloped edged ones.

  12. I love your collection. I think I'd be a bit late to start trying to collect now...it's all been 'had' by bloggers!!
I think that pink frosted is a hyacinth bulb forcing vase. I have a couple of those in regular glass but have never tried growing bulbs in them, so that might be an upcoming project.
Thanks for the Heritage heads up. Had forgotten all about it.

  13. I agree. That's not a sherbet glass - it's definitely a hyacinth bulb glass. I have a similar one in yellow sugar glass. It's really very pretty!

  15. Wow - look at your collection - they are such subtle colours and I think the yellow has to be my favourite. How strange that pink and yellow are so rare. I just looked on ebay and couldn't find a single piece - perhaps my keywords weren't quite right.

  16. I only have one piece of utility ware so far, a blue gravy jug. But I am sure if I ever find more it will become a collection!

  17. My heart lifted, and before I could catch it soared out of the window. Why? Because I was so glad as a new blogger to discover my blogging hero struggles with her blog design. Is your Tech Wiz Niobe I wonder?

  18. Have stumbled upon your blog via several others. I love your china collection. I have the Grindley in green in a coffee pot and lots of demitasse cups. They were my mothers from the 40s I think and I love the soft sagey colour. The cups are great for serving chocolate pots!
