I thought after so long I should just load some pictures and see what happens! Most of you will know that I decided to take on a vintage unit in Nottingham a year ago . I started with a cabinet and have grown my business month on month throughout the year. I still hunt out my signature barkcloths but also search for other fabrics,

ephemera, small items of furniture, tins and more recently early plastics. The two fabrics above are both unused 1950s and 60s . I love the top one with its London buildings.
This one with the potted plants is a typical image. I'm still out hunting at car boots , fairs and charity shops. Below is one of my favourite finds of the summer.

I've been looking for different ways to style my unit and bought a number of crates in Devon earlier in the summer. I was quite pleased with the way my stall was looking until some of them were bought and I had to come up with something else...

So a couple of weekends ago at Peterborough Antiques Fair I was thrilled to find this ultra kitsch glass fronted cabinet which has taken up residence for the time being. It fitted in the car and is now housing some of my finds in my unit.
.

Subtle it's not but I love colour and tastelessness sometimes! I'll add more pictures of my finds soon!

Well its been a very long time since I last posted due to the fact that I thought I had broken Blogger! Not good with technology it's taken Niobe's return from uni to get me back up and running again. I've missed you all but life has been flying by so fast I've been finding it difficult to keep up! Today I decided I have to be kind to myself and allow myself time to write a post. As I'm now off work for a couple of weeks I hope to catch up with your blogs too. I've been very busy with my Ticking Stripes business and am constantly on the look out for new treasures. One of my latest obsessions is vintage hankies. I've been picking them up whenever I see them at the right price...

I was really pleased when \i found this book on Amazon. It is handkerchief sized as well as the same shape and is full of gorgeous photos of old hankies. Last time I was in London I managed to find this lovely old hankie box which I couldn't resist.

I keep dropping the hankies into an old basket which is now almost full! I spotted the green and the purrple ones at a fair recently and was told that they are called sweetheart hankies - given in war time. The green one has Royal Army Service Corps embroidered around the motif.

On the back of the hankie in one of the corners is a little flap and behind that is a powder puff. This one as you can see still has a little colour on it!

I'd been wondering what to do with all these hankies when I read Selina Lake's book "Homespun Style". When I saw her picture of hankie bunting I was inspired. No sew bunting - got to be worth a go! Just fold in half and knot together! I won't be leaving these out but did think that this would be lovely at a vintage wedding.

Back to the book - there doesn't seem to be that much to say about the humble hankie but what it lacks in history it makes up for in the myriad of designs and colours. I've yet to find any swaps!

The book is sheer eye candy with colour themed spreads of different designs. Definitely one for the bedside table and a lovely gift if you know of anyone with the same obsession!

Here's hoping it won't be so long before the next post!
Last week I managed to get to a couple of car boots finding some great things. Its a while since I showed you any of my find,s so I'll share what I managed to capture when the sun shone. What I would call a church hall chair which has probably been sat on by many a Womens Institute bottom over the years, a pretty eiderdown and some wonderful womans magazines form the 1920s.

What a wonderful day. Note to self - must make one of the flowers with the long dingly dangly stem. Julie says they are great for twiddling the Post Office queue. Mine would have to be a very long stem - I queued on the pavement for 20 minutes last week before I could get through the door!Ticking stripeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14515028867135834777noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992762951482940335.post-82109482498901357552012-04-19T21:11:00.001+01:002012-04-19T21:16:02.087+01:00Guaranteed to make you smile! Some of you will know that I like to go to these workshops for inspiration and to learn new skills. This one was lamp shade making and given the price of lampshades I decided it might be a worthwhile investment.

We were to be shown how to make one of the little conical shades and a drum shade. (But not before I'd had my usual browse round Louise's studio). We were able to choose our fabric or paper from Louise's wonderful stash but I had taken some barkcloth with me. We actually deconstructed a standard Wilko's lamp shade as these are apparently cheaper than buying the bits and pieces you need from a craft supplier. And then we reconstructed with our choice of fabric. So why did it take all day you ask. Lots of precision cutting and concentration required . This was hard as I was sitting with Two Bones and a Bagle and we had plenty to chat about!

In the end I was quite pleased with my efforts. The tall one was made from part of my stash - a chaise longue loose cover made from barkcloth and painstakingly taken apart. The trim was another bit of something I'd had for years which seemed to just be perfect for a bit of granny chic in a lampshade.

It wasn't until I'd finished that I looked at what other folk had done and I loved these two paper ones - one a comic covered one with a red ribbon hiding the centre fold and the other a vintage sewing pattern bonda webbed onto the plasticised inner sheet which is what makes them fireproof

Louise has just published her new batch of summer courses so if you fancy treating yourself have a look at her website. I'm thrilled to say that I have managed to get on one of the Dottie Angel and Ted and Agnes days! Yes ladies Dottie Angel is coming over to old Blighty for a touch no doubt of grannifying goodness. A gorgeous Marshall and Snelgrove hat box. Why don't our boxes and tins look as lovely as this today? This week I have thrown away a dozen chocolate tins at the office. I would have liked to have thought twice about these as the possible collectables of the future but they weren't attractive. Unfortunately I had only a couple of hours but I knew what I was looking for so strode past lots of the outdoor stands in search of fabrics. I found a couple of stalls selling old advertising tins and boxes which I always like to see but the tins were expensive. I know that's down to their rarity but then I do seem to be quite lucky in finding them relatively cheaply.

I was looking to find the stall of Liz Von Hasselt - known in blogland as The Washerwoman and veteran of the original Vintage and Handmade Fairs in Chipping Sodbury (not to mention all the other fairs she's invlolved in). I hdan't a clue how I was going to find her stall given the size of Newark but eventually found fabric on a clothes horse beckoning me into a tent.

Over on the table covered in red cloth was all manner of vintage loveliness. Yes it might look like a jumble sale and indeed there was no rhyme or reason to the pricing as far as I could see. The stall holder lives in France and brings his finds over so as you can imagine there were some lovely pieces.
And then behind me I spotted a much nicer display with lots of loveliness!

I'd managed to find the stall I was looking for. Liz had some fabulous fabrics which we spread out and mused over and I took some picture before making my choice.

Imagine my horror on arriving home later to find I had lost the bag with those fabrics in. And now blogger seems to be playing up so I can't upload the pictures of the fabric that did make it home! But I will - along with some of my other recent finds...soon

Hope you are all enjoying the winter scenes and not having too many problems. ..

Love Wend
<br (As far as anyone can be). I've moved into the job and am getting used to a new routine. Outside of work I seem to be in mega organisation mode and getting nowhere as something always comes up which takes precedence over what I actually want to do.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1OSvZ5fyUAxJJ324l0y-4WcKzK5R39X3QQ3QFe-_GzgkaoSnkhUC02JXeG-a9MGMrWYEXkAe5DPvsJ-FM1Y4IIFSkOgbuw_rzLgOC_foDsu1sxnt5TvH5h-gDLWdEgjY9k8odcXBOYxk/s400/Haby+3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680918686194109250" />

A few months ago I spotted these drawers in a landscape designer's office and asked for first refusal if he decided to sell them. This was with a heavy heart. I have on several ocaasions embarrassed Niobe with my performance at these checkouts and she has banned me from using them saying its not fair to others! I must not use them unless she is there to supervise!

I only had a basket with a few bits so decided to take the chance and live dangerously. As ever despite my efforts the robotized tones came across with the "unwanted item in the bagging area" not once but several times. The gent who had persuaded me was very attentive and kept rushing back to me every time this happened. "Don't worry I'm with you" he kept saying and swiping his magic card across the screen. Mortified I continued with my efforts, becoming more and more grumpy. "God, you must have the patience of a saint hearing that noise all day" I grumbled as I tried desperately to find a barcode. "Why do you think they gave me the job?" he said. I paused and looked up to see he was wearing a clerical collar. Oh, the embarassment! I apologised, paid and scuttled out quickly, inwardly vowing not to use these checkouts again. They do do away with jobs for people after all don't they? I was relieved to get home and unpacked.

Have a great weekend!

PS - Moonlighting clergy as the austerity cuts start to hit?Ticking stripeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14515028867135834777noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992762951482940335.post-54847687491598048562011-10-29T22:56:00.002+01:002011-10-29T23:06:42.082+01:00The irony?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmomYWW-kBgmbXM1qkV_4bKobaB9EAFJ3FnQAq278mCfiaKsvpwfATvLHwyRKxDsoM444J8NWwv4dzHVxnBOTpAlcPWroYI-R-LGFQA-S7VrOcngVdUiX6oghM9zLCr6EoSeP1xbj2cPc/s400/SAM_8633.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669038295317759154" />

Sunday school prize 1924 - favourite car boot find last week!Ticking stripeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14515028867135834777noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992762951482940335.post-64665484104051837692011-10-23T18:25:00.004+01:002011-10-23T19:09:58.422+01:00I thought it would be quiet once Niobe went to uni but hadn't realised quite how many things I had committed to to prevent empty nest syndrome!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 202px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtXjIV20iHDql98AvYp9FbJnc3IduY3_Mmezv8ILlCXoyR0wiVa7Mb1CSO-Ll9bJz_lvx7Spu4SfAn2_DBigAblmWx9gFckDvK9neW5jqAgEwjvxpYZrQlj8fYNGl-R5X77wPatPGF6qQ/s400/318820_260145880686597_202787506422435_843657_1691271984_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666741273644991858" />

One of these is a cabinet at Hopkinsons, a former hardware shop in Nottingham now converted to gallery, studios, antiques, vintage and of course a tea shop. Often I find that my nearest and dearest do not appreciate the things I find and love. Indeed some regard me as a bit of an oddity...so I had to smile when I saw this in a shop window! Obviously I wouldn't dream of spending the £180 it cost on such an item (unlike a customer in the shop who was proudly saying she had the same up at home. However I did find a pack of the Lexicon cards in a charity shop last week for a couple of pounds. Just wondering what little bit of advice I should assemble - maybe "to thine own self be true". What is your mantra?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQanno5vcDwfqegBt29dqcvWMhl41tmOHGC-njPydZW1Ft4sPq-aFPfZEckZrKOdhAaTxYUugZEqQoWLL6zuMZytuMBWweHOhsDk6A4jP44gNan2oqmc2FBAFxboC90Z_ngWnHT4JUTpY/s400/Blog+7.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5661944972174211970" />

I digress. I always take along my basket loaded with vintage bits and pieces that I've collected to incorporate somehow.
We were able to choose from a selection of styles.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvd_Ns4VzXIVkLTDzJB1EtECDryJrJ0EnSXAXLjESpjQCI33uj0EelURLl6KP9a9pUENxL57vHuilb38NnuVD9EIKFdYjPYMum9PDx3m-tVgJxmfQGLNEV4RsTPm9Ly2vuOldStgjjedU/s400/4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651724248994715170" />

Not restricted to tweed you could use any of a whole shelf full of fabrics to make any of these beauties...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidKDjsBbgcyNT8aZgNAeiYPJhU39uzMBrxkTe4NvDt2HO9ZicNefmqT2bSqhAvr_CG0AKC6Y2Ycn0iX3EMDeetmGQ8s_6YoyRffsvZnC7ABjNdYGoJNzo9A15yd5gfnX2dUcPbZgOt4go/s400/3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651724242217924722" />

As usual I had the problem of having to make too many decisions - which fabric, which lining, long or short handles, to embellish or not etc, etc...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVOaXBgxtY0dic-C98kAcfFiE0uqISBCa9BMQznGYlK1HPoqsvYTKOiar54IR59YxzWUjibisVuwfrQHEB9urJ8_4CLqecbPaw923gINg7fLl3NTAX_8DNrtQ3Gop5WYg3Cb782I2_CoA/s400/2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651724240906867906" />

Louise provides the fabrics, trimmings, equipment etc but it's always lovely to use some of your own bits.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKU_Iylonh0_Y-vfTAWqfc40JSCtR660cAWEYahytaXYTwa6jz2dGjovSsa6TI6B-XlOf_d_KcGk3y7qvyBmQiZKWq5wZLIHIYzP3dE5tNI3o5o__gt2ypAGORz5O_ynydLIdpFXMvCc8/s400/Bag+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651724237578586098" />

Was I going to be able to turn these fabrics into anything resembling any of these lovely bags?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDnVYc8F3D-2DxsxkzsltaEJsSw9UFLbROx2GiW4DxRMO1hkU1j-Aef08gW1WvjROFuvoN0yHQGLK7Pehu-wlfbfvWYKbgw3mr4neFiOrncNloGEX1EyHaXahc8xo-GxN6aoKSLyHPnlc/s400/7.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651724253995745138" />

I chose a charcoal grey suit jacket which I thought would coordinate nicely with a piece of my ticking stripes and perhaps a piece of barkcloth. But today I decided that I would actually put some of Niobe's onto a document so I could save them and clear them off my phone. Now I've typed them up I see them as a small snapshot of our relationship and I'm glad I've done it. Here are some of my favourites from the last couple of years...

Just been talking to Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee! Strange. X

Glad you’ve not crashed yet! Xxx

Crazy rain!!!! I’m wearing flipflops!

Dalai Lama on the bus! X

I need you. I’ve never had so much to do :( xx

Mum I’m so sorry, I don’t want to ruin your evening which I hope you’re enjoying but I took the opportunity of you not being there to practice on the sewing machine as I was going to use it for your xmas present. I think the needle has snapped or something. So sorry. If I remember correctly this always used to happen in textiles and didn’t seem to be too much of a problem. I’ll pay for what it takes to fix it. Sorry I shouldn’t have used it without your permission I just wanted to practice as I really wanted to make you something for xmas. Love you xxx

I’VE FINALLY MADE MY FIRST EVER BATCH OF BUTTERFLY CAKES!!

Also I could really have done with a chat today, just to let you know – not to make you feel bad or anything xx

HAPPY BIRTHDAY I LOVE YOU MASSES YOU OLD DRUNKxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (it was my 50th!)

Overnight in a cold tent I have a hoody on and socks but must admit the socks have let me down.
:( xx

Come soon, I’m cold, xx

I’m moving to the sea.x

Just had a career lesson. Want to open a tea shop in Southwold. Xx

Why is it that people say something & it goes in one ear and out the other. But then someone else says it and you believe them? Not a rhetorical question. I’d like an answer. LY.xx

What happened to the bacon butties?

I need a hug when I get home. Xx

Hi Mum. I missed you today. It’s been raining all day and all my stuff is soaking . :( Walked so far today. I am dead. I needed you in my pocket earlier :( xxx

The pocket reference is to a message I gave when she was little - that if she was ever alone and afraid and needed me all she had to do was put her hand in her pocket and squeeze very hard and she should be able to feel me squeezing back and know what she had to do next. And nobody would know...I didn't expect her to be doing it for so many years!

Does anyone else do this? I'm hoping she won't mind my sharing these!Ticking stripeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14515028867135834777noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992762951482940335.post-17237503334532932852011-08-24T19:57:00.006+01:002011-08-24T21:17:01.958+01:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigm-9gvULwuXBEofbkd095wgm0tUU1qrMDOFONiUFWHaeE8tD60iGc-3gSeFYzbU-UnDSD-dUc9kx_v4Lx0dA7ad5EFq6LB4at8CUKF20jO8N_LDJ_UWvhQY7h0BdFepN15CYvgyjqgS0/s400/Ed+3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5644509864706623154" />
I took my vintage bike to Edinburgh but hadn't bargained for the hills and cobbles - it wasn't long before I decided feet were safer (if slower) than wheels.
Obviously I couldn't go without my car boot fix and was amazed at the subterranean car boot held four floors below ground level in a car park. It was quite surreal - very dark, very hot, very busy and quite weird. But I did manage to find a few bits and pieces particularly liking the little Susie Cooper plate on the right and the unsorted box of buttons. I paid more for these than I normally would but as I said - it was dark but I thought I could see some Art Deco ones - I wasn't disappointed!
I love looking at independent shops in other cities and wasn't disappointed although there weren't as many as I would have liked. I liked this plate found in one such store along with other similar ones. It can only be used for display as the image is merely decoupaged on but I can think of plates and images I could combine for my wall...Might have a go!
What do you think to the jelly mould chandelier - fun - yes. Price over £900. So you probably won't be buying one. Still - great idea for the holiday weekend - empty the kitchen cupboards and see what you can do with a few bits of wire and some redundant stuff! Plus bling...Images to be posted on Monday please!
But it wasn't all vintage. Edinburgh was a real assault on the senses. It really is a cultural bubble with lots and lots to see and do. I didn't know the work of David Mach but the exhibition poster drew me in with its collaged image
coat hangers. Lots and lots of them - I had to take a closer shot to share with you. Quite amazing. As were the collages. This is a huge exhibiton over several floors with over 40 large scale collages based on the anniversary of the King James VI bible. One floor has been taken over as the artist's studio and you can watch him and his team working from lots of boxes of itemised images to make these works.
Next time I'll choose a different week when they also have the book festival...and certainly won't bother taking a selection of high heels!
Thank you for all your messages - Niobe has done brilliantly exceeding the high entry requirement and getting the place she so wanted at Exeter Uni to read Philosophy and Political Economy. I'm thrilled and very proud.

The picture is another Edinburgh shot where she has just floored the old man to the right of the picture. Her arm is raised in victory. I thought it was appropriate!

Once tense is tense
Twice tense is too tense
Three tense is quite stressed
Four tense is fraught
Five tense is frightening
Six tense is tightening
Seven tense is distressed
Eight tense is taut
Nine tense is intense
Ten tense is uptight
Eleven tense - keep your distance
Twelve tense just might...
Thirteen tense - RIGHT! THAT'S IT!
I've had it up to here with your tense times
table, it's not a proper poem it's not a proper
times table and that's the last time you make
me make a fool of myself in public...
(continue ranting indefinitely, then
fade and look sheepish)
